Cafe Culture

In Prishtina alone, there are more cafes per capita than any other country in the world. This is no surprising as they serve the best coffee in the world as voted by many of the Internationals here. It is not the coffee beans, but the way they make their macchiatos, that makes it the best.

As you can see from the video, there are so many young people unemployed in Kosovo, that they hang out in cafes with their friends.

You will find when you visit, that going for a coffee is an impromptu experience, no asking a friend to have a coffee a few days in advance, but within minutes. The tradition is that the one that invites you out for coffee pays, which is not a big deal as it is so cheap.

Every cafe has a wifi connection, so just ask the waiter for the password, as they won’t mind.

In the winter everyone sits inside, when it’s cold with some cafes having a log fire. In the summer everyone sits outside. Cafe food has improved over the years, with new cafes getting more adventurous and  more of them catering for vegan and vegetarian tourists.

Bars

Many cafes turn into bars in the evenings and you are spoilt for choice if you want to go out for a drink. The most popular local beer is Peja, but in the last few years new beers have come on to the market.  Prishtina Beer, which is a lager like Peja, Sabaja is a craft brewery making a stronger stout type beer, that has recently brought out an IPA (Indian Pale Ale).

There are three Wine and Beer Festivals in Prishtina every year in the summer months. Watch the events calendar so that you don’t miss the dates.

Kosovo is also a producer of wine with Stone Castle being the biggest producing wine and Raki. The Balkans is a red wine growing area in Kosovo and Macedonia, so it is better to stick to the red. If you are lucky to visit Prishtina when the wine festival is on, you will have the opportunity to taste all the wines. However if you miss it, there is a Stone Castle wine shop in Prishtina where you can taste their wines, or you could travel down to the Stone Castle winery itself and take a tour of the winery.
